The Reluctant Debutante

31st May to 2nd June 1979

Performances took place at St. John’s Church Hall

A light-hearted, almost farcical, comedy that unfolds with humor and chaos as the mother navigates her anxiety about potential scandal. Her mix-up of two men named David leads to unexpected situations, like inadvertently pairing her daughter with the notorious 'David Hoylake-Johnston' instead of the ideal 'David Bulloch'.

Mother is deeply engrossed in orchestrating potential matches for her daughter ahead of her entrance into society. Father, on the other hand, harbors strong reservations about the entire affair, hoping to avoid the financial strain it may bring. Undeterred by Father's concerns, Mother remains steadfast in her mission, believing she can outshine her friend's matchmaking efforts. Despite the clumsy advances of a knock-kneed aristocrat vying for the young girl's affection, her heart is steadfastly set on a suave man from the city. This unwavering affection even gives Father cause for alarm. Yet, fortunes take a turn for the better as the sought-after gentleman rightfully claims his noble inheritance, bringing a satisfying conclusion to the matchmaking saga.
