Sweet Shop Owner

Sweet Shop Owner
A local sweet shop owner, he leads the children in praising the joys of sweets and chocolate. He is warm and welcoming.
Sings – “The Candy Man

Willy Wonka
The eccentric, charismatic owner of the world-famous Wonka chocolate factory. Willy Wonka is a reclusive and imaginative genius known for creating the most extraordinary confectioneries. He is filled with a boundless energy and his persona is larger than life. He is funny and serious and changes between the two quickly. He is also both charming and insensitive. His decision to open his factory to five lucky children is actually a calculated ploy to find the perfect child to take over his factory.

Charlie Bucket
Charlie Bucket is the emotional heart and soul of the musical and is earnest and kind-hearted. Charlie is unassuming and respectful toward everyone in his life. He comes from a poor family but dreams of a better life. Even though he has every reason to complain, he never does. Charlie's integrity and pure heart lead him to be the final Golden Ticket winner.

Grandpa Joe
Charlie’s paternal grandfather. Grandpa Joe spends all his time in bed with the other three Bucket grandparents. He is extremely imaginative and fun loving. He realises a return of his childish energy when Charlie finds the golden ticket. He thinks Mr. Wonka’s idea to send out golden tickets is a marketing stroke of genius, and he continues to think Mr. Wonka is brilliant while the other parents think he is mad. Grandpa Joe is kind, caring, patient and also sensible. He always reminds Charlie to look on the bright side. He is Charlie’s greatest friend and confidant and the two make a great duo.

Augustus Gloop
A boy who loves nothing but eating. Augustus is rude and defiant in his never-ending quest to fill his own face. His parents choose to indulge him rather than listen to his whining. He suffers for his greed in the factory: while sucking from the chocolate river, he falls in and is sucked up by one of the widest pipes.
Augustus sings “More of Him to Love” with his mother, which includes yodelling.

Veruca Salt
A spoiled brat who loves ballet. Veruca demands anything she wants and throws tantrums until her parents meet her demands. She is mean and completely self-involved, and her parents always give in to her wishes. Veruca’s impulsiveness causes her trouble at the factory. She demands to own one of Wonka’s trained squirrels, but when she marches in to claim it, it deems her a “bad nut” and sends her down the rubbish chute.
Veruca sings “I want it now

Violet Beauregarde
A competitive, avid gum chewer. Violet’s attempt to beat a gum-chewing record completely consumes her. At the factory her gum-chewing antics become her downfall when she grabs an experimental piece of gum against Mr. Wonka’s advice. She eagerly chews the gum and turns into a giant blueberry.
Violet sings "Queen of Pop", a pop-inspired song, reflecting Violet's obsession with fame and her belief that she is the best.

Mike Teavee
A technology-obsessed child. Mike is obsessed with television, video games, and gadgets. Mike is bratty, loud and obnoxious. He does not understand the word "no." Mike is slightly more complex than the other bad children in that he is smart enough to realise when Mr. Wonka is lying to him. Still, his attempts to get answers to his questions go completely unnoticed. At the factory he wants nothing more than to check out the chocolate television room. Once there, he spies the opportunity to be on television himself. Without regard for his own safety, he engineers a filming of himself and ends up shrinking down to a couple of inches.

Mrs. Bucket
Charlie’s mother. Mrs. Bucket is nurturing and worries constantly about her son. She unfailingly tries to give Charlie her portion of a meal, which he always refuses. She is extremely giving in her efforts to take care of the four invalided grandparents with whom she lives.
Mrs Bucket has a nice voice, and sings “If Your Father Were Here”.

Grandma Josephine
Charlie’s paternal grandmother. Grandma Josephine, like her fellow grandparents, spends all her time in bed. She loves Charlie and is quick to judge others. She is innately interesting, has good comic timing and is a solid actor.

Grandpa George
Charlie’s maternal grandfather. Grandpa George is pessimistic and terse. He is hard of hearing. He does not seem as judgmental as the grandmothers and clearly loves Charlie. He has good comic timing and is a solid actor.

Grandma Georgina
Charlie’s maternal grandmother. She is the mirror image of Grandma Josephine. She too is very quick to judge others. She is innately interesting, has good comic timing and is a solid actor.

Mrs. Gloop
Augustus’s mother. She is indulgent of their son’s overeating. Mrs. Gloop is proud of her son’s appetite and thinks it better that he eats than be a nuisance. Mrs. Gloop accompanies Augustus on the tour of the factory. A strong character part.
She sings “More of Him to Love”, which includes yodelling.

Mr. Salt
Veruca's affluent father, who indulges her every whim and showers her with expensive gifts. He believes that money can solve any problem. Mr. Salt goes so far as to divert his entire factory from shelling peanuts to shelling Wonka bars to get Veruca the golden ticket she demands.

Mr. Beauregarde
Violet's father, who is just as competitive and boastful as his daughter. He is obsessed with her success and is eager to capitalize on her newfound fame. He lets his daughter talk back to him and ignores her insults.

Mrs. Teavee
Mike’s mother. Mrs. Teavee is a hands-off parent who struggles to connect with her son due to his obsession with technology. She allows the television to parent her son.

The Oompa-Loompas
Fun-loving characters hailing from Loompaland. Mr. Wonka’s diminutive work force performs all the work in the Wonka chocolate factory. They also enjoy dancing, beating drums, and singing songs about what happens to bad children.

Mrs. Green
The poor, second-hand vegetable seller that Charlie buys the only food his family can afford. She is a kind woman who cares about Charlie and his family, but her priority is making a living.

Cherry Sundae
A zany and quick-witted reporter who adds a delightful dash of humour to the show. The reporter is "on the scene" for all four golden ticket winners.

Jerry Jubilee
Another reporter who is the bearer of bad news for Charlie's golden ticket ventures but is full of wacky energy while doing so.

James
James is Charlie's friend from school. He has a few lines of dialogue with Charlie.

Matilda
Matilda is also a schoolmate of Charlie's, but she's a bit of a bully.

The Candy Man Kids (Sophie, Danny, Alfie, Billy etc)
Candy Man Kids sing "The Candy Man

Squirrels
The squirrels are non-speaking, non-singing roles and there can be as many as necessary.
